A little while ago a friend of mine asked if I ever had the inclination to create my own games or had experience in writing stories for games. So started the first discussion that ultimately led to the creation of this website for groundupgamesonline, and many game projects that are in different stages of the evolutionary cycle.
The first order of business was to start delving into what it would take to create a game and how on earth will we ever be able to release something worth playing. The XNA Framework created by Microsoft for deploying games on the Xbox 360 and Windows platform was a good candidate to wet our feet. My previous experience in programming C# definitely had an influence in selecting this path for our first group of games. The inclination is always to start with the next best MMORPG that will take the world by storm and earns us a place in the record books. Soon reality set in and we looked at realistic starting points that will enable us to slowly get familiar with the technology while creating real games that is fun to play and has some replay value.
Where do you start when faced with a clean slate and a creative mind that is always thinking of the next level to tackle and master? The obvious place for me was to read some of the indie game forums and the creators club for XNA to familiarize myself with the playing field. It soon became apparent that the game creating business will represent a steep learning curve and even simple game ideas quickly became coding nightmares overnight. Fortunately I stumbled onto an article giving a simple plan of attack for newcomers to the game developing community. The suggestion was to start with very simple games and slowly progress to the more difficult. It all made sense and off I set to fully engage myself in the business of creating games.
The proposed path to gaming succes:
- Tetris
- Breakout
- Side scroller
- Pac-Man
Blox of Doom
For obvious legal and copyright issues we couldn't create the next Tetris, but we could create something with the same game play mechanics. So Blox of Doom was born. Read more about the project here...
Many of the other game ideas are under active discussion and even future projects that will go beyond the shallow waters of game development have flared up. Be sure to read the Projects section where these future games and their evolution are discussed in more details...
What's next for groundupgamesonline?
We're still working hard at getting that first game out the door and published in the Xbox community games. We will continue to focus on basic games with real game play value that can bring our fans hours of fun without breaking the bank. We hope to be able to release Blox of Doom within the next month and then create a Windows version that should be available for download from this web site.
Come back often to read up on the latest news and get the inside scoop on our projects.
